Thirteen years after Tyler is born in the idyllic Swiss village of St. Aubin, his mother decides it is more than time to take him back to his home country, as Tyler likes to think of Switzerland. First, though, they will travel through six other European countries and Tyler will see (well, it is his mother's hope) that there is more to her than a stressed-out working mom; underneath is the adventurous traveler of years gone by, just waiting to get out in the world again. So off they go, mother and special-needed son, as Tyler puts it so beautifully, leaving Northern Virginia behind for a month of exploring Europe by train, bus, and foot. They sweat and shiver, laugh and argue, get lost and get lost again, all the while making memories. This is the story of an Aspie and his mom seeing part of the world and finding their place in it. Come join their journey, where Asperger's becomes assburgers and there is never a dull (or quiet) moment.

Some books are written with particular audiences in mind and employ careful planning and an overall design by the authors. Such a book typically deliberately make some points and seeks to get particular messages across. There are other books which are written by authors primarily for themselves. In this case making points is not the main objective, and thus the book is less planned, but instead exhibits a more of a free-lowing style, driven by the sequence of the events or emotions. To me, Tracy Mannon's book is of the second type. Many parents follow the urge to record a child's "history" of growing up by taking pictures or videos. Tracy takes to writing journals, which seems to provide the raw material for the book recording her son Tyler's childhood years. A journal, by definition, is written for oneself. But as a book, Tracy has left a valuable legacy to Tyler.

In the first part of the book, I come to know tidbits of everyday events, and snapshots of Tyler in his formative years. Here I see more of Tyler as a boy and changes in him through the years. The second part of the book tells of Tracy's trip to Europe with Tyler. I read more about the interactions of Tracy with Tyler, and get to know more about the mother and her parenting style. I found myself giggling at Tyler's acts of silliness and wisecracking, or feeling like I was in the same shoes with Tracy when facing embarrassing moments of parenting. I also wiped away a few tears from laughter upon reading about Tyler under the raging hormones and from the family tragedy that happened to a couple Tracy met during the Europe tour. Reading the book constantly brings back memories of my own son when he was a little boy and then a teenager. Tyler's European trip also reminds me of trips I took my son to faraway places. I feel that I have come to understand Tracy as a parent.

People's lives change the moment they become parents. Now they are a provider, an educator, a protector, a planner, a listener, a chatting partner, etc. in the child's life. They worry about behavior, attitude, and the mental state of the child and are concerned about how the child will turn out at every stage of his or her life. They are in a struggle to try to get the best for their child out of life. Facing the task of parenting, they appear to be strong in front of the child; but they have their moments of weaknesses and self-doubt, and even breakdowns when alone behind a closed bathroom door. A parent knows how hard it is to raise a child, especially a special needs child; but a parent also knows how rewarding it is to see the child makes progress. Travels with Tyler reveals the details relating all these facets of parenthood. Tracy's book takes me back to re-live my experience with my son and I can relate to many details she has written in the book. I believe any other parent will have a similar experience when reading the book. For parents, it is a bitter sweet journey reading Tracy's book. We lived through the process. Now we look back via the book, with tears in our eyes and smiles on our faces.

The two sections of the book written by Tracy, plus the lovely Epilogue written by Tyler himself, reveal a mother's struggle to bring up a special needs child, driven by deep love and a strong will. As stories unfold, the two characters, the mother and son, come alive. When I finally closed the book, I cannot help but wonder, what the future holds for them?

Travels with Tyler A Mom Journey with Her Aspie Son eBook Tracy M Mannon Reviews

Tracy Mannon is very real in her portrayal of her life with her precious son Tyler. She begins the book by taking us through a journey of early childhood and moves forward with a journey she and Tyler took through Europe. This is an honest, fun, loving story of the path they have taken together. It ends with an epilogue from Tyler, a young man who is just delightful. I have passed my copy along to others, it's well worth reading!
I recently read Travels with Tyler, by Tracy Mannon, and I enjoyed every page. In the book, Tracy not only shares personal snippets of Tyler's childhood that made me smile in a warm-hearted way, but she also chronicles her amazing trip through Europe with him. It is the adventure I imagine all of us moms would love to embark on but don't have the courage to do so, and yet Tracy did it with her thirteen year old "special needed" son in tow.

In her book, Tracy invites the reader not only into their journey through Europe, but also into her own personal journey of raising a son with Asperger's. Every emotion is touched on, from heartache and worry to humor and joy.

After reading this story, and getting to know Tyler, I am truly inspired to look for the humor in the most challenging situations, and am reminded once again to embrace our children's differences and focus on the unique gifts they bring to the world.
This book is well written and hard to put down once you start reading it. I found it very entertaining, and I also learned a lot about Asperger's that I never knew before. It was also interesting following along with this mother and her son on
their adventures traveling around Europe.
As the title suggests, this light-hearted and humorous book tells the story of a mother and her son, who happens to have aspergers. It’s an easy read, and a decent page-turner with several laugh out loud moments. The hilarious episode involving a Britney Spears video and early experiences with puberty particularly stands out.

More important than the book’s entertainment value, however, is its use a tool for parents and educators. The book provides insight into the struggles of people with Aspergers and can equip parents and teachers alike with the tools to help them adjust. It will help parents of children with aspergers come to terms with the syndrome and know what to expect from their child. It can also help teachers understand aspergers and create a learning environment that can meet the needs of aspergers students.
It’s not only a fun read, but a vital read for teachers and many parents.
I just finished reading "Travels with Tyler" by Tracy Mannon in just two days. All I can say is WOW!!! How did she ever manage a trip like this with just she and Tyler. This is from someone who does not have any sense of adventure. It truly was an adventure and she is one strong young lady. Some of the early parts of the book and the things that happen in an "aspie's" life are cute. As the child grows, so do the challenges. She truly has the patience of Job. I had never heard of Asperger's before till I re-connected wth my dear friend of 60+ years (Tyler is her grandson) and now I read everyting I can about it. Unless you have walked in her shoes, we don't know what it is like to have a child with Asperger's. I'm so glad I read the book and it opened my mind a little to all the things that go on in their life. I loved the book. It is easy and informative reading for anyone.
