A coming of age trilogy set in WWII. Book One, Intrusion. In 1937, war threatens, not only in Europe but in Billy's home too with the arrival of his frail, artistic cousin. Idolised Kenneth is a charming villain, but avaricious and predatory. The emotions that enable Hitler’s rise - envy over power, desire for new territory - now ferment at home. Emotionally neglected by parents, bullied by uncle and manipulated by cousin, Billy imagines he owns the precious Cossack sabre his father’s work colleague has shown him. It sustains Billy through Kenneth’s invasions, through disruption, evacuation and then the shock of war. As the bombing of London begins, the whole family is evacuated to the country and Billy for the second time faces new challenges but also delights.

Read all three and could not put them aside, skipped meals, sleep and did not leave home until I finished all three! I won't relate the details as others have done that but the characters and the story itself are totally believable. The parents of this little boy are the stuff of nightmares, the cousin as evil as one can imagine, the main character Billy is a child you just want to love and protect even when he is approaching adulthood. Can't understand why these books are not on best seller lists everywhere. Fantastic writer, highly recommend you read them today!

Intrusion WWII Two boys A fateful rivalry A Relative Invasion Volume 1 Rosalind Minett 9780992716752 Books Reviews

A very well-told tale of two London cousins, their quarrels and their families in the lead up to World War 2 and when the war begins in earnest. Reading it, I am minded of books I've read and dramas I've seen over the years about this period. Whatever is going on, boys will be boys and families will be families. This novel is an unforgettable read.
Read volume 2 first and it was a free book. I liked it to much came back and paid for Vol. 1. I found this to be very interesting about the children during WW II. I am still awaiting for Vol.3 that was promised for June'16. I will buy when it hits to complete the series. Great story line of family disorder.
Read this book quickly because I found it very interesting, and then went on to read Book 2 and 3. Explaining how the war affected a 7-year-old boy and the difficulties that he had to deal with in his own family, shows the author's in depth comprehension and understanding of his feelings of his every changing world.
This is a stunning little historical novel. I call it "little" because it is totally from the view of a young boy, with only those events and images that a child would notice. Minett provides grounding with the historical time by dating each chapter as England slides into World War II. Billy's own personal war is waged as he becomes the target of bullying, not only by his arch rival Kenneth, but by his school mates and even his parents, whose idea of child care is of rigid control.
As Billy grows, so grows his understanding of the people in his personal world and... strangely... his tolerance.
The first in a trilogy. I look forward to the second.
Intrusion – (A Relative Invasion - Book 1 version) by Rosalind Minett evokes the reality of wartime Britain through the eyes of a young Billy. Insecure and lonely to due his emotionally remote parents, Billy’s home life is invaded, first by Kenneth, a bullying deceptive young cousin, and then by the bombing of London and the chaos of war. Evacuated to a rural village for safety, Billy discovers over time a more empowered side of himself and a broader understanding of people and their beliefsDeftly.

Author Minett deftly creates a razor-sharp sense of wartime England while depicting Billy’s point of view with illuminating psychological depth. For this American, the author introduces an aspect of WWII of which I had previously been unaware the evacuation of women and children from cities to villages during the bombings, and so well drawn are these scenes it was almost like watching a film. I’m definitely looking forward to the next two books in this trilogy about Billy, Kenneth and their lives during wartime England.
This story is about Billy, and starts during the 1930's. He was very happy in his London neighborhood, with family all around. Then he is sent on his 1st evacuation, that was really interesting. He comes back to London late during 1939. Things have changed, and he spends time living during the early bombings. The last few pages are about the beginning of his next adventure, I could not stop crying. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
In his brief lecture "Learning in War Time," delivered during World War II, C.S. Lewis pointed out that even in the midst of wars and other traumatic events, ordinary human activities still take up most of our lives. People, he points out, "propoound mathematical theorems in condemned cells, make jokes on scaffolds, discuss the last new poem while advancing to the walls of Quebec, and comb their hair at Thermopylae." Rosalind Minett's book caused me to reread that essay because it is one more vivid illustration of the truth that no matter how troubled the world is, boys still grow up doing boyish things, families function mostly in the same old ways, both well and badly, and the personal tension between two young persons can be just as engrossing to the reader as the fate of entire nations thrown into conflict.

I was happy to purchase this one and will continue to read Ms Minett's work.
